I will be the first to admit that I’m not a wedding design expert. I have decided to specialize in wedding management (or day-of coordinating, as it’s sometimes called). But every now and then, I have had a client ask for design assistance. I will also admit that I have had no formal education when it comes to wedding planning. I created my own process and systems using my own wedding as an example when I first started out. I later got an Event Management Certificate from the University of South Florida.
Wedding Client Design Guide
I believe that education is important, but I also understand that not everyone has access to formal wedding planner education from the start. And that’s okay. I totally get it. However, as a full-service planner, you will be asked to create a wedding design specifically for your clients. So how do you do this? I was actually educated by a local florist who had hired a wedding coach to teach her the best practices for wedding design. Here is what I learned and how you should consider designing for your clients.
1. Start with a Pinterest Board
Ask your client to start a secret wedding Pinterest board and have them add you to it. This will allow you to understand what your client wants in their design. Ask about the specifics of their pinned pictures. Gather an idea of wedding inspirations they love like colors, textures, and patterns—even what types of fonts they love.
2. Have Them Fill Out a Design Questionnaire
Next, have them fill out a design questionnaire. This questionnaire will have super specific questions that go over many factors of their wedding design. It will ask your client things like where they like to shop, what style is aesthetically appealing to them, and what mood they want to convey at their wedding. A good questionnaire will have at least 20-40 questions about their tastes, likes, and dislikes.
3. Creating a Wedding Client Design Guide
After that, you’ll want to create a design guide for your client. Inside this guide you will help visualize and organize their event. It will cover wedding attire, ceremony details, cocktail hour design, and even reception details. Pictures are instrumental in this concept as well as written content. A wedding design guide should be very detailed. You want your client to look at your wedding planner design guide and love it, believe in it, and want to invest in it.
